MSC Sisters Celebrate 100 Years of Mission in the U.S. Province

MSC Sisters

August 10, 2008, begins a year-long celebration for a group of courageous women who have persevered to serve thousands in the United States and

beyond. These women are known as the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, or the MSC’s. Their year-long celebration will begin with a special Mass attended by the MSC Family and held at the Sisters’ Motherhouse in Reading, PA. This Provincial Motherhouse has served as the headquarters of the MSC Sisters throughout the U.S. Province since 1911. From this location, the Sisters plan and implement their service to the entire U.S. Province, which includes the U.S. and Mexico.

The MSC Sisters have much to celebrate! Over the past 100 years, thousands of Missionary Sisters have

gathered, prayed, and been commissioned at this Motherhouse, also known as St. Michael’s Convent, and fondly remembered as St. Michael’s High School. The MSC Sisters serve in the U.S. Province in various capacities. On the grounds of the Motherhouse, the MSC Sisters offer a truly unique assisted living ministry, known as Sacred Heart Villa. The uniqueness of Sacred Heart Villa is rooted in the love and fellowship of the MSC Sisters who invite the lay residents, currently 37, to join the Sisters’ in daily masses and to come to know the Sisters through participation in the Villa’s programs and events. Additionally, MSC Sisters minister to the Pennsylvania population through their work in health care, social work, education, pastoral ministry, hospice, and counseling.

Outside of Pennsylvania, the Missionary Sisters celebrate their multi-state presence in both the aforementioned ministries and in Native American ministry, college campus ministry, and circus ministry. In Mexico, MSC Sisters strive to provide social assistance to thousands; to educate, to house, to advocate, and to foster indigenous leaders.

The Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus minister to all people by virtue of their sincere and unrestricted mission: to share the compassionate love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with all.
