Age discrimination, although illegal, is still felt in the workplace, but often it is difficult to prove. So what are we to do if we find ourselves among the 800,000 Americans age 55+ who have lost their jobs over the past year? According to the AARP website, prospective employers are legally allowed to ask you how old you are, so be sure to figure out in advance how you will answer if it comes up.  Otherwise, try not to focus on age as you do your job search. Instead, identify transferable skills, clarify your goals and show how your experience and skills match the job for which you are applying.

Do the preparation you need to be confident and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Some communities offer job training and job search assistance specifically for older workers and the US Labor Department offers the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), which has centers around the country. Take advantage of opportunities to learn new skills, especially computer skills.  Above all, make sure you don’t buy into the myths and stereotypes about older workers!
