Sometimes circumstances are such that our loved ones can no longer live independently, or even with family members, because they need more medical attention than we can provide ourselves. While the decision to move to a nursing home is terribly difficult, it is further complicated by the reality that sometimes the people we trust to provide our loved ones with better care than we can give them, instead neglect or abuse them. For instance, in 2000, the Atlanta Long Term Care (LTC) Ombudsman Program interviewed 80 residents in 23 nursing homes in Georgia and found that 44% of residents reported that they had been abused, and 38% reported that they had witnessed other residents being abused.
