Missionaries of the Sacred Heart

July 25 - Reflection:

What power moved Jesus into and through his ministry all the way to the cross? One answer that we might glean from the Gospels is "his compassion." That answer however does not explain the origin of his compassion. Is Jesus simply a kind-hearted individual who feels pity for us? A lot of people are kind-hearted and feel pity for those who suffer and are in need. Is that what Jesus is in his totality, a very good human being?

Two Gospels in particular shed light on the deeper motivation of the Lord. The first is from the account of the Baptism in the Jordan where Jesus heard: "This is my beloved Son. My favor rests on him" (Mt 3). Jesus was aware that he in his human heart was deeply loved by his Father. The second is from John: "Doing the will of him who sent me and bringing his work to completion is my food" (Jn 4). These and many other passages show that Jesus always moved according to the lead of his Father. Jesus knew he was deeply loved and called to be an outreach of that love.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I believe that you are much more than a good man. I believe that you reveal your Father's love for you and us.
