Before the age of 20, 49.2% of all children in the United States will live in a home that receives food stamps. Even this shocking statistic may not fully indicate how many families have difficulty putting enough food on the table. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), only about 67% of people eligible to receive food stamps (which are part of the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), actually receive them. Keep in mind, that for a family of four to be eligible to receive food stamps, their gross monthly income must be no more than $2,389, and resources, such as a bank account, must be $2,000 or less.
Some findings of the study include:
- Nearly 1 in 4 US children will depend on food stamps for 5 years or more.
- 91% of children in single parent households and 37% in married households will receive food stamps.
