Each year, the FBI tracks reported incidents of hate crimes. In 2008, there were 7,783 hate crime incidents reported by law enforcement agencies across the USA. For more information, please see "Hate Crimes in the USA."
Hate affects children and adults alike. The Office for Victims of Crime’s 2010 NCVRW Resource Guide reported that in 2007, over a third of U.S. students between the ages of 12 and 18 had been exposed to hate-related graffiti. Furthermore, 10% of students reported that someone had directed hate-related words to them.
The Southern Poverty Law Center is one organization working to keep track of hate groups in the United States. In 2009, they counted 932 active hate groups, which represents more than a 50% increase since 2000. Their website also includes a listing of recent hate incidents in the United States. For instance, on July 13 it was reported that a woman with four biracial children in Spokane, WA found a swastika painted on her front door.
