Monday, 07 July 2008 08:28

Fr. Joseph Muller, MSC

On June 22, Fr. Joseph Muller, MSC celebrated his 50th Anniversary as a priest, and 200 people gathered to celebrate with him. Friends, family, former classmates, fellow MSC, MSC Sisters and parishioners attended the special Mass in the afternoon at Holy Family Church in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, where Fr. Muller serves as Parochial Vicar. Mass was followed by a cocktail hour and dinner at the Holy Family Club and Fr. Michael Camilli, MSC, the Local Superior, was the MC. Guest speakers included Jack Vogel (Fr. Muller's nephew), Fr. Joseph Tobias, MSC (Pastor of Holy Family Parish), John Kelly (Grand Knight, Council 4282), and Peter Ruggiero (President of the Holy Family Athletic Association). Special thanks to everyone who participated and to the staff of Holy Family who helped make the event such a success.

In his 50 years as a priest, Fr. Muller has served the Church in a variety of ways, including as pastor, Novice Master, translator, Development Director and as founder of The Compassion Foundation. He has served extensively both as a foreign missionary and in mission at home.

After his ordination in 1958, he completed a Masters in Education in preparation for his assignment in Papua New Guinea (PNG), which he began in 1960 as pastor of St. Clement Hoffbauer Church (in the Lihir Group of Isles). While in Papua New Guinea, he was asked by the General Administration of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart to become the MSC Novicemaster of the Papua New Guinea Region and two of the novices he taught later became bishops. He then served as Pastor of Immaculate Conception Church on New Ireland until his return to the USA in 1984. He also worked as a translator for the Bible Society and for the Bishops' Liturgical Commission as well as Chairman for the Music Commission and was appointed Vicar General of the Kavieng Diocese in 1980. After his return to the USA, Fr. Muller began working as the Development Director in Aurora, IL and in 1989 founded The Compassion Foundation, which assists people based on "need, not creed". He also started the first Lay Association of the MSC in the USA in 1971. Before coming to Holy Family Parish, Fr. Muller served as pastor of St. Therese Parish in Aurora, IL where he began a missionary group to visit the homes of parishioners in order to help them deepen their faith. His current assignment is as Parochial Vicar of Holy Family Parish, where he has been very involved with the Knights of Columbus and with the Holy Family Athletic Association since his arrival three years ago. Congratulations Fr. Muller on your many years of dedicated ministry!
