Please join us in praying for the friends and family of Fr. Andrew Pong, MSC, who passed away in the evening of Monday, July 19. Fr. Pong was the first Papua New Guinean to be ordained as an MSC priest, and later served as the first Papua New Guinean MSC Provincial. Many Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the United States served with Fr. Andrew and he will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.
In 1947, the MSC USA Province responded to the need to rebuild destroyed missions by sending members to Papua New Guinea. Over time, the MSC mission in Papua New Guinea grew, and in 1989, the MSC Papua New Guinea Province was established (MSC provinces are self-sufficient). Today, its members work in schools, parishes and hospitals. The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the United States staff St. Martin Parish in Namatanai and continue to help support the MSC Center in Kavieng and the St. Joseph Training Centre in New Ireland.
