Catholic Social Teaching: Solidarity, Option for the Poor and Community Outreach PDF Print
Wednesday, 09 December 2009 10:26

According to Catholic teaching, solidarity helps us see other  people (and nations) as our neighbors. We are one, human family and we must go beyond our differences. We are called to overcome barriers of race, religion, gender, nationality, ethnicity, and economic status and work for global peace and justice.

Solidarity is determination to commit oneself to the common good, because we are all one family and we are responsible for each other. Solidarity prevents rich nations from being indifferent to the poverty and lack of basic human rights experienced by people living in other nations.

Participating in community outreach is one way that we can each practice solidarity. Outreach can help us overcome barriers based on race, religion, gender, etc., both because it can help us get to know people from different backgrounds (and thus challenge our stereotypes) and because the work itself is directed towards transcending barriers.

The Church also teaches us to help the poorest members of our society because whenever some members of a community are marginalized or denied their basic rights, the whole community suffers. When we reach out and help those who are vulnerable, we help to strengthen our entire community.
