Devotion to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
|
A devotion is the way we express our spirituality. It is a practice that we repeat in our lives so as to remind us of the values we want to maintain and keep our focus on the true God that we have discovered. This year we invite you to join us in following the example of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart who trusts and has a complete surrender to God’s will by trying the devotional exercise below. We hope you will find the materials we share from Meditations on Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, written by one of our own members, Fr. Ronald Leinen, helpful to your spiritual growth.

Day 1: Introduction to Meditations on Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
Christians have had a special love for and trust in Mary, the mother of Jesus, since early in the history of the Church. The great churches of the East, centered on Constantinople, venerated her icons and praised her in their liturgies. In the west, churches were dedicated to her under various titles for Mary. One of these, appearing in the middle of the nineteenth century in the prayers of the Society of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart is “Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.” Scholars may discuss the historical roots of this title. In this book, I propose to reflect on its meaning for me, and MSC priest at the beginning of the twenty-first century and to share my reflections and prayers with you.
I pray the Lord and his Blessed Mother may guide you to a deeper understanding of their love for you in your daily life and in your reaching out to others in Jesus’ name. Pray for all the brothers, sisters, priests, and lay people of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart that they may be blessed in their mission to proclaim the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus everywhere. Pray also for me. (Fr. Ronald Leinen, MSC) |

History of the Devotion
When our founder, Fr. Jules Chevalier was serving as a curate to a parish in Issoudun, France, he began planning to found a society whose mission it would be to address the evils of the time by bringing God’s compassionate and merciful love to all people. On November 30, 1854, he and a fellow priest at the parish, Fr. Maugenest, began a novena to ask for Our Lady’s light and help, and Fr. Chevalier promised Our Lady that he would venerate her in a special way.
On December 8, 1854, the last day of the Novena and the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Fr. Chevalier received a gift from an anonymous benefactor and the Society of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart was founded. Fr. Chevalier fulfilled his promise to Mary, honoring her with the title: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Read more
