One might ask: “Why do we have a feast that focuses on the mystery of God? Don’t we pray to God each day? Don’t we know God already?”
Of course we know God, but not completely, because God is love. Love is a dynamic interchange of persons that is forever growing.
The mystery we contemplate, the dynamic of love within God that creates the universe and each of us is truly “more than we can bear right now” as Jesus says in today’s Gospel from St. John. It is an unfolding mystery revealed more and more deeply throughout our lives.
Moreover, the Trinity, God of the universe, is not calling us to simply stand in awe of transcendent majesty and adore. In fact God is calling each of us to enter into the mystery: to allow ourselves to be rejoined to divinity and so fulfill our humanity by accepting the divine love that is revealed and offered in Jesus.
The celebration of the Trinity is to bring us to experience the presence of God in the core of our being.
