Image from http://www.cruzblanca.org/hermanoleon“Here I am” are words from the first book of Samuel and Psalm 40 in this Sunday´s Readings. There is a lot of meaning packed into those few words. Samuel in saying: “I am” was announcing his own personhood. He was accepting his own self. He discovered for himself his own individuality and importance before God. God revealed God´s own self to Moses in similar words: “I am who am”. Entering into relationship with God one discovers oneself as well as God. Saying: “here” with the “I am” expresses the acceptance of the present moment. Samuel lived in the “now”; not in the past, nor the future.

“Speak, for your servant is listening” is then a response given by someone who knows and accepts his or her own self and importance before God. They are words of trust before the Creator of all and of each of us which express willingness to be and do what we were called into existence to be and to do. If we listen, the word takes hold in us.

May each of us be as Samuel.
