The United States has a lot of influence over creditors and international banks. Our Congress could leverage full debt cancellation for impoverished countries, but to do so, they need to know that the American people care. Let your Representative and Senators know that international debt relief is important to you. Check out the website of Jubilee USA Network to learn more about ways you can get involved. For instance, perhaps you can participate in upcoming events such as The Jubilee Movement at the United States Social Forum on June 26 in Detroit, MI or Stand Up and Take Action Against Debt & Global Poverty from September 17-19. Below are a few other tips for getting involved:

• Learn more about why debt cancellation is important. One source for information is Jubilee USA Network’s website. You can also learn about The Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative on the IMF website.
• Help increase awareness by talking about debt cancellation with your friends, family and coworkers.
• Pay attention to the news. When your paper runs a story related to debt cancellation or ways to help impoverished nations, write a letter to the editor.  When Congress is considering legislation relating to debt cancellation, call or write your Representative and/or Senators to let them know that international debt relief is important to you.
