Teenage Pregnancy and Poverty |
|
|
- Children of unmarried teen mothers who do not receive a high school diploma are 9 times more likely to grow up in poverty than children of married mothers who have a high school diploma and delayed childbearing (67% vs. 7%)12 Only 38% of mothers who have children before the age of 18 ever graduate from high school.
- If the teenage birth rate had not decreased by 1/3 between 1991 and 2002, an additional 460,000 children would be living in poverty.
- Approximately 80% of fathers of children born to teenage mothers do not marry the mothers. According to a study published in 1997, these fathers pay less than $800 in child support because they are likely to be poor themselves.
- About 25% of teen mothers begin receiving welfare support within 3 years from the birth of their first child.
