Set a good example
Set a good example for children (and others) in your family by consistently showing respect for all people in your words and actions.

Never judge the person.
There are going to be many people in life with whose views or actions you strongly disagree. While it may be necessary to challenge their views or condemn their actions, make sure you never judge the person.

Celebrate diversity.
Attend a festival that celebrates the food and culture of one or more other countries.

Don’t laugh at jokes that aren’t funny.
Sometimes your silence alone after the punchline will be enough for the person to realize his or her mistake. Or, depending on the circumstances, you may want to have them explain to you why it is supposed to be “funny”.

Speak up.
Let friends, coworkers, and family members know when you find something they say or do offensive. Be prepared to explain why.

Be open to the feedback of others.
If a friend or family member says that they find a term you used or a joke you told offensive, and you’re not sure why, ask them. They may have a perspective you’ve never considered.

Dialogue.
Participating in a true conversation with someone who has a different perspective allows you both to find common ground and understand each other better. Sometimes you may come to an agreement about the issue at hand, but even if you still disagree, the  process respects the dignity of each person and can help overcome fear.
