What is Abortion? PDF Print

Abortion is the termination of pregnancy. When we speak of abortion as a social justice issue, we are referring to induced abortion which is distinct from spontaneous abortion which is also known as a miscarriage.

Induced abortion causes the death of an unborn child and it is for this reason that the Catholic Church works so hard to promote respect for life and to end induced abortions. The Catholic Church teaches that every human being, from conception until natural death, is worthy of respect. It is for this reason that the Church works so hard to promote respect for life in general and to end induced abortions in particular. Unborn children are innocent human beings and they have the right to live. Abortion deprives them of this right and for this reason is not morally justifiable. However, it is important to remember that although the Church condemns the action of abortion, it does not judge the woman who obtains the abortion.
