Today, in addition to Santa Margarita Maria Parish, MSC in Colombia are also involved in formation and provide direct assistance to the poor. The formation program (Casa Chevalier) is flourishing and 6 young men recently took their first vows (August 2008). As part of their formation, the seminarians studying at Casa Chevalier go on mission experiences to very remote areas in Colombia during their Christmas and Easter vacations. Seminarians also help manage the MSC farm, thereby helping to provide the food they eat.
In the evening of October 31, the residents of the Jules Chevalier Formation House in Bogotá, Colombia participated in a costume party. The MSC seminarians at the formation house come from different backgrounds and different parts of the country, and so the main purpose of the event was to share and present various aspects of the traditions of different regions of Colombia. Colombia is currently divided into 32 departments (states) and a capital district, and much like other countries around the world, different regions have unique traditions and folklore. The seminarians from the Bogotá area did a representation of that area’s ancient traditions, while those from Huila dressed up as Celio, a mythical figure from that region. The MSC students from the southern part of Colombia dressed up as characters from a local ghost story having to do with the assassination of a priest, and so on. It was a great opportunity for the seminarians to remember their origins and share them with their fellow classmates.
