There is no one answer to who has an abortion, although there are some trends in characteristics shared by women who procure abortions. Women from different socioeconomic, racial, and religious backgrounds and of different ages have abortions. Mothers who already have one or more children have abortions as do women who have no children. Although the majority of women obtaining abortions are unmarried, many married women also have abortions. Below are some statistics on women who obtain abortions.

Abortion and Age

  • 50% of women in the United States who obtain abortions are under the age of 25.2
  • 33% of all abortions are obtained by women between the ages of 20 and 24.2
  • 23% of all abortions are obtained by women between the ages of 25 and 29.12
  • 17% of abortions in the United States are obtained by teenagers.2

Abortion and Race

  • 37% of abortions are procured by black women.2
  • 34% of abortions are procured by non-Hispanic white women.
  • 22% of abortions are procured by Hispanic women.
  • 8% of abortions are procured by women of other races.

Abortion and Religon

  • 43% of women who have an abortion identify themselves as Protestant.2
  • 27% of women who have an abortion identify themselves as Catholic.

Abortion, Marital Status and Other Children

  • Over 80% of women obtaining abortions are not married.3
  • 66% of abortions are obtained by women who have never married.2
  • 60% of abortions are obtained by women who already have one or more children.2

Abortion and Poverty

  • The abortion rate among women living below the federal poverty level is more than four times that of women above 300% of the poverty level (44 vs. 10 abortions per 1,000 women).2
  • Poor and low income women account for more than half of abortions in the United States.3
