A promise of deliverance

Jesus gave hearing to the deaf, sight to the blind and a promise of deliverance to the poor and lowly. This had been foretold of him: “On that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book; and out of gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see. The lowly will ever find joy in the Lord, and the poor rejoice in the Holy One of Israel” (Is 29). It is obvious that the prophet is talking about a deliverance, mainly spiritual, of which Jesus’ miracles were a visible sign.

Who is more deaf than the person who does not hear the voice of God calling to life; who is more blind than the person who cannot see any way to escape the slavery of sin or addiction—and, indeed, may not even see the entrapment? Who is more poor and lowly than a human being whose life does not show the dignity that God put into human nature? Jesus came to correct all these deficiencies. We await the One who will enable us to hear and see the truth and come to the fullness of what we can be.

Prayer:

I pray, Lord, that you will come into me and enable me to hear and to see the truth that will save me. I pray that your humility may raise up my lowliness.
