Peter To Rot

Blessed Peter To Rot was born in Papua New Guinea to parents who were converts to Catholicism. His father suggested he become a catechist while he attended the mission school. He became a wonderful teacher and assisted the priest in educating the people. He married and had 3 children. When the Japanese took over the islands during WWII, he taught in secret, but was soon captured and imprisoned in a concentration camp. Despite his wife’s begging him to give up preaching and teaching, he refused and was executed by lethal injection.

Church for All: Richness and Contrast

By Fr. Hugo León Londoño, MSC

One of the most significant characteristics of the Church is its mission, if not the most important. The Lord Jesus gave us this mandate in the Gospel of Matthew 28:16-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…” Also inspired by this mandate, we Missionaries of the Sacred Heart share the joy of helping to build the Kingdom of God, which is the purpose of the mission. Therefore, we can feel that the task has not been in vain and that the source opened by Father Julio Chevalier is still alive and bearing fruit.

In Colombia, although the mission is small, we can bear witness that it is vibrant. We participate in the Lord’s mandate and do not forget that we want to be the Heart of God for the world. Within this richness, we give strength to the Church with our Consecrated life and contribute missionaries to the ecclesial life who ardently proclaim that Jesus Christ is alive among us. We had the joy of accompanying the priestly ordination of one of our brothers, Antonio Posada, MSC. Although of Mexican origin, he freely chose to participate in the mission. After an experience as an immigrant in the United States, he is now serving in the urban Diocese of Soacha, a place thirsting for God’s love and facing all the difficulties of the big city and the social problems caused by inequality and injustice typical of our developing countries. Here in this Colombian context and the metropolitan area of the capital, we serve with selfless love people who are also capable of teaching us the strength that exists in their faith-filled hearts.

On the occasion of the canonization of Peter To Rot, October 19, we can see the grace of God and the contrast of mission. As ordained ministers, we participate fully among the people of God, but this participation reaches its fullness with the help and collaboration of committed individuals who, like Peter To Rot, have fallen in love with Jesus and courageously proclaim Salvation. His richness and contrast are greater because he formed a family yet was not afraid to proclaim the wonder of the Kingdom, a wonder founded on sacramental life, on values, but above all, on the unique personal experiences that allow the Church to always be present. Peter To Rot fills us with pride; after walking God’s path with his life and martyrdom, he has been recognized on the path to holiness, a task to which we are all called. We ask the Holy Spirit to grant us perseverance to proclaim the Gospel that He gave to this first Saint of Papua New Guinea and that his seed may also be the strength for our founder, Father Jules Chevalier, to become a saint, since his vision of being the Heart of God in the world remains and will continue to be alive. We ask Saint Peter To Rot to intercede for all of us who serve the Kingdom of God and to grant abundant vocations to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. May we, consecrated and lay, continue to be a treasure and a symbol of an ever-living Church.

Prayer for Canonization

O God, who never ceases to enlighten your pilgrim Church on earth with the glorious passion of the martyrs, grant us, we pray, that through the example and intercession of Saint Peter To Rot, we may live firmly in the confession of our faith and be sustained in adversity. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for every and ever. Amen
