We have prepared ourselves during the time of Lent to live this time that includes many symbols that help us understand the Resurrection of the Lord in our lives:
First, there are the fire and the paschal candle. The light manifests to us the presence of Jesus in our lives. Jesus destroys darkness and shows us the way to find the Love of the Father. With this light we can believe that Jesus Christ is alive, He is with us, and He brings us new hope because death doesn’t have any value in our Christian life. We must believe that Jesus’ resurrection is the best moment to realize that God loves humanity and wants to everybody to be happy. This Easter candle reminds us that Jesus is the light that illumines our lives. Sometimes we get carried away by the darkness of error, misunderstanding, pain, despair, distress, etc. We can proclaim the happy ending of the hard events that we have recalled in Holy Week. On Holy Thursday, Jesus, after proclaiming love as the essence of life, showed that love by loving His disciples to the maximum. He was abandoned by them. He was judged by others and ended His life on the cross on Good Friday. Then He exchanges the cross for the light. On Good Friday, we meditate on Jesus’ death and at Easter, we can see the Resurrection like a light which illumines our lives and fills them with new life. Also, this Easter candle reminds us of our baptism. All those who are baptized receive the light of Christ and are obliged to share this light with others at home, school, job, etc.
Secondly, at the Easter Vigil we hear some readings from the Old Testament. Maybe for some of us they are boring. But it is important to show that God, The Lord, is with humanity. In the book of Genesis, God is with Abraham. Through the sacrifice of Isaac the Lord explains how strong our faith should be. We must have the ability to deliver our material and emotional possessions to God. In the book of Exodus, we can see the Hebrew people and the presence of God with them. When the people feel that the Egyptians want to destroy them, Moses extends his arms, and God shows His strength by opening the Red Sea. On that day, the Hebrew and the Egyptian people recognized the power of God and the presence of the Lord among a suffering people. Finally, the prophets Isaiah, Baruch, and Ezekiel indicate to us that the Lord is totally in Love with His people. He tolerates our bad actions and how many times we turn away from Him. He always is available to take His beloved children and gather them to form a beautiful nation, because the Lord wants everyone who has turned away from their evil deeds to return to the arms of the Father. Through these readings we can experience the presence of God in our history. Today we are Abraham, Moses or any prophet if we say “yes” to the will of God, and if we are available to let ourselves be loved by the Lord through Jesus Resurrection.
In the New Testament, St. Paul expresses how Baptism is the sacrament which gathers us together like a family of Christ. All the baptized are called to renew their lives through the Resurrection of Christ who broke and overcame every kind of knot or tie through His death and Resurrection. At the Easter Vigil there are people who will be baptized. We have to give an example of how to live as a Christian.
The third symbol in our celebration of Easter is the risen Lord. In the gospel, Luke talks about the experience that some women had in the first day after Saturday. Luke said that the stone was rolled from Jesus’ tomb and the tomb was empty. This is the sign of Jesus’ Resurrection. The Gospel said that the women were the first who listened to the great news communicated by two men in dazzling garments. “Do not look for Him among the dead. He is living. He is risen”! This news gave them happiness and hope. After that, they ran and told the apostles. They were the first witnesses of the triumph of the Crucified: apostles of the apostles. Today we could be Jesus’ apostles if we are witnesses of the Resurrection of the Lord. How? When we open our lives to change. When we open ‘our tombs’, the Lord enters and fills them with life. Today we are called to tell everyone our joy, our foundation of faith that Christ lives, and He is with us. Happy Easter my brothers and sisters. May Jesus fill your lives with joy. Happy Easter to everyone!
