Second Sunday of Ordinary Time 2019
For St. John, the experience of the Lord is like a great marriage feast filled with so much joy that everything changes. Sadness is turned into joy; despair into hope; water into wine.
We have already celebrated Jesus coming among us at his birth (Christmas), his coming to enlighten all of humanity (epiphany), and his coming to forgive sins (baptism in the Jordan). Now we celebrate this new intimacy with God with his mother and his disciples at a marriage feast.
Each time we participate in the Eucharistic celebration we celebrate our union with God in Christ, a marriage of divinity and humanity. Each time we become aware of the needs of others and turn to the Lord as Mary did and then do whatever he tells us, our solidarity and charity will renew the miracle of Cana and bring joy into the world.
As we become aware of so many people who are displaced by violence and war, suffering from famine and drought, or still persecuted for their faith, today’s readings challenge us to do something. May we act with the faith of Mary and do whatever he tells us.
