Mary, the mother of Jesus
Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a maiden waiting for God to fulfill her people’s dreams. She was a maiden waiting for God to fill her and, through her, all of us. She rejoiced because she was beloved. God’s Spirit had descended upon her with love’s gift, her child, who was a most beloved Son.
After Jesus, Mary is a perfect model of the poor in spirit. The poor in spirit are people who believe that God has sent a Savior, who remain faithful to God no matter what, who practice justice and mercy in daily life, who follow the lead of God rather than relying solely on themselves. Above all, they always remember that everything is an undeserved gift of God. St. Paul wrote: “At the appointed time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for us godless men….It is precisely in this that God proves his love for us, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom 5).
Prayer:
With Mary, Jesus’ mother, I long for the presence of God within my heart and in my life. Let me live each day entirely in the care of God, as Mary did. I pray for the grace to wait with hope, trusting in God’s promise of salvation.
