The Sacred Heart and God
“God’s love for us was revealed when God sent into the world his only Son so that we could have life through him; this is the love I mean: not our love for God, but God’s love for us when he sent his Son to be the sacrifice that takes our sins away… God is love and anyone who lives in love lives in God, and God lives in him.” (1 Jn 4:9-10, 16)
“Something which has existed since the beginning that we have heard, and we have seen with our own eyes; that we have watched and touched with our hands: the Word, who is life – this is our subject.” (1 Jn 1:1)
Every good gift comes to us from the Father in heaven. All creatures look to Him and he gives them their food in due season. He has shown his love in every aspect of creation. Everything we have is due to his generosity. In him we live and move and have our being. But God did not give us only things and life. He gave us a share in own wonderful life. He made it possible for us to be filled with the very fulness of God Himself: God is love and he pours love out on all his people. The fulness of his love comes to us in Jesus Christ His Son who was sacrificed that we might have life in him. The Father knew our weakness; that we are but dust. He knew that our life is like the mist before the morning sun. In our weakness, he had compassion on us and sent his Son to be like us in all things but sin. The very Word spoken to create the whole universe took flesh that we might be able to hear him with our ears in human words; see him with our eyes in human flesh; touch him with our hands that in our weakness we might believe. But most of all he gave him a heart of flesh that burned with love for us; a love that demanded a total sacrifice of that humanity; a heart where human and divine love became one and was poured out on the world. To the Father he says: “Behold, I come to do your will.” To men he says: “I come that you might have life and have it to the full.”
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the great love you send us in the Heart of your Son, Jesus Christ. We thank you for making it possible for us to experience your love in spite of our weakness. We praise you for making our weakness strong in your love, and for sending your Son filled with your love that we might know in the flesh your personal interest in each of us. We thank you for being our Father and for the plan of salvation you prepared through the human flesh of Jesus that man might be saved through a man. We thank you for allowing us to know your love in the Heart of Jesus where human and divine love meet. We praise you, Jesus, for not disdaining our human condition but gladly following your Father’s plan of salvation. We thank you for the love of your Heart which you constantly pour out on us. Father, we will proclaim your love to all your children.
