Life is meant to be shared, not only with people but also with God. This, I think, is what prayer is. It is not begging God to give us things, no matter how much they might benefit us. It is giving ourselves to God and allowing God to give Himself to us.

We are often told that we live in an uncaring world. It is hard to argue with that! For some people, life is like a daily crucifixion. They never get off the cross. The only thing they ever experience is abuse and rejection. Unless we make kindness a way of life, we may never experience how our acts of kindness could, and very often, do make a huge difference in someone’s life, and perhaps it may be the only sign that there is someone who loves them.

Before Jesus returned to His Father, He commissioned the apostles to an enormous task, to go out into the whole world and tell everyone about the Father’s love for them. All along, Jesus kept telling them that what He was asking them to do was going to be difficult and will meet with much opposition.

Every time that a priest consecrates the bread and wine into Christ’s actual body and blood, a miracle occurs! The bread and wine are changed into the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus. What still remains are the appearances of bread and wine. The reason why is obvious.

If we think we are of little value because we have so many faults, shortcomings, imperfections, or sins, we need to remember that God loves us anyway, and so, we need to stop looking down on ourselves.

So, are we happy about the condition of our world? We must be honest and sadly admit that the world has not changed all that much for the good. There are over a billion Catholics and many more Christians of other faith traditions. You would expect sheer numbers to make a huge difference. Unfortunately, there is a war going on somewhere each day.

We forget, at times, that Jesus gives this same command to all His followers, only now we are in the mix. We may think that we are not good enough to be Jesus disciples or that we must first overcome all our doubts and hesitations and have all our questions answered before we can bring Jesus’ good news to others. But that is not true.

Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to be with us forever and this Spirit will help us deal with life. God’s spirit will comfort us and love us always. The Spirit’s presence in each of us will always help us and guide us to be the gentle face of Jesus in the world. No job is more important!

Many years ago, the great St. Augustine came up with a famous phrase that captures our greatest longing. He wrote this about God: “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” Our hearts are always looking for true and abiding peace, a place to call home.

This weekend, I invite you to reflect on one of the most soothing and comforting pictures we have of Jesus. Jesus must like it too, because it is what He calls Himself, the Good Shepherd.
