“You are the salt of the earth…. You are the light of the world.” Jesus told this to the crowd that was following Him. But this description is meant for us as well. Jesus knows that about us and He thinks that about us. Jesus even says that about us. So, what does He mean when He says we are the salt of the earth?

We need to hear such a message of hope and encouragement and, thank God, we have the example of faith and hope shown in two elderly people Simeon and Anna that God is still in charge of the world no matter how much evil there is in it. Simeon had been waiting for the Messiah for some time, and Anna had been looking for this Messiah day and night for years. Their faith was rooted in the promises of God. It was not an empty faith but a faith powerfully inspired by the Holy Spirit. It was a faith in God who alone can bring salvation to us. Theirs is a faith we would do well to imitate.

All of us can have a profound effect on others. If we strive for integrity, for honesty, and if we pray for our leaders to be honest and just, maybe, just maybe, we may be a beacon of hope for a better and kinder future.

Sooner or later, our ideas of a Messiah will clash with what Jesus is really doing. Jesus, the real Jesus, the real Messiah, the Lord, the Good Shepherd, our Savior and our true Friend, this Jesus will upset our expectations. This Jesus will ask us, He always does, if we really want to follow Him, or if we want to cling to our idea of who the Messiah should be. And Jesus wants to know if we are ready to follow Him wherever He wants to take us, or do we want to be comfortable and worship a God of our own choosing?”

We really need to listen to John the Baptist. He offers us hope and assures us once again that the reign of God is here. He has some great advice for us: “Reform your lives!” he tells us. If we work hard on this, we can and will become better people and that will bring about a better world.

In his letter to the Romans, St. Paul is very helpful. He gives us some attainable goals. He tells us to live honorably and to let Jesus help us in our efforts to love one another. The Bible is filled with promises made by God and He has kept every one of them. St. Paul urges us to let the past be past; and to let go of past wounds, past anxieties, past hurts, past fears and doubts, so that we can live freely in the present time and hope for a better and safer future because God kept His promises in the past and we can trust God to keep the promises He makes today.

What difference does Jesus make? For those who believe, Jesus makes all the difference, between death and life, darkness and light, hell and heaven. We know the Good Thief had come to believe in Jesus because of his dying request, “Remember me when you come into Your kingdom.

The people of Jesus’ day were concerned about their future and sought some reassurance from Him. Jesus gave them one simple response. Live faithfully now and you will be prepared for whatever the future brings. His words are still as valid today. Living daily life in a faithful way means that we choose to embrace whatever comes our way, and live each moment without backing away.

We will soon come to the end of the church year, and the focus for these last three weeks before Advent is on some very weighty concerns, the end of the world.

Today, I want to talk about something we should always be concerned about, and that is our destiny, heaven. Heaven is being with God, face to face, and forever.

Jesus invites Himself to dinner, and something marvelous happens to Zacchaeus. 

Like Zacchaeus, we can take the chance, invite Jesus in, and watch Him do a new arrangement of our lives.
