The rule of love

“How deep are the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How inscrutable his judgments, how unsearchable his ways! For ‘who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has ever been his counselor?’” (Rom 11). Trying to figure out what God has in mind, in the events of history or even in the events of our own lives, is useful only if we remember that God sees much further than can any human being. Otherwise, we can jump to conclusions that have little relation to God’s mind.

Even the graces we receive can have purposes well beyond what we can understand. God does not have to follow any rules, except the rule of love by which he binds himself. Anyone of us looking back on his or her own life can find examples of the roundabout ways in which God sometimes leads us. After the fact, God’s plan may make a lot more sense than it did at an earlier time. Certainly God does not cause sin or enslavement; yet even from these, God can draw us to a deeper union with himself.

Prayer:

There have been days when I was discouraged, Lord, when you were already preparing me to receive your gifts. I thank you for your kindness toward me.
